Most people come to Vegas by Airplane. If you are one of those many who came by plane, you have to decide if you want to rent a car or take a cab. If you plan to primarily stay in the tourist areas such as the strip and downtown you might be best to take a cab to your hotel and skip the rent-a-car. Car rental rates are similar to other major cities, but there are an assortment of fees and taxes that can make your inexpensive rental price balloon. That is particularly true if you add things such as supplimental insurance. If on the other hand, you plan to explore the many entertainment and recreational activities that are off the strip, a car rental is a must. Public transportation within the city is tolerable for a ride or two but is very time consuming. Travel outside the city is impossible without a car unless you are taking a tour bus. See Getting around Vegas for more information on local transportation.
